Founded in 1994, Shape Up America! is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization committed to raising awareness of obesity as a health issue and to providing responsible information on healthy weight management.
Dr. Blair is a Professor in the Department of Exercise Science in the Arnold
School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He most recently served as President of the
Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas. Dr. Blair also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the
School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the College of Education
at the University of Houston.
Dr. Blair is a past-president of the American College of Sports Medicine, a past-President of the American College of Kinesiology and Physical Education, and a current Fellow in the American College of Epidemiology as well as an active member of several other professional societies.
His research focuses on the associations between lifestyle and health, with a specific emphasis on exercise, physical fitness, body composition, and chronic disease. He has published more than 190 papers and chapters in the scientific literature and has received numerous honor awards for his work. He currently serves on the editorial boards of many scientific publications, and is the Senior Scientific Editor for the Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health. Dr. Blair has authored/co-authored several books on physical fitness including, Fitness After 50, which focuses on how older men and women can increase their physical activity to improve their health and function.
