How will my doctor determine my BMI and assess my health risk?

It’s simple. As a first step, your doctor will:

• Measure your height in inches and round off to the nearest inch.

• Weigh you and round off your weight to the nearest pound.

• Determine your BMI using a chart.

• Determine your health risk based on your BMI alone.

The higher your BMI, the greater your health risk. Conversely, as your BMI goes down, so does your health risk. However, a really low BMI can also be unhealthy. If your BMI is less than 19, check with your doctor to be screened for a possible health problem, including an eating disorder.
