Walking Community Action Kit The Pedestrian
Safety Roadshow
Is your community a place where you can safely walk? Do you have
sidewalks or paths on which to walk? Does traffic stop for
pedestrians? If the answer is no, the U.S. Department of
Transportation (USDOT) can help you organize your community to
make it more walkable. The USDOT has developed The
Pedestrian Safety Roadshow to help you take a community approach
to identifying and solving the potential problems that affect
pedestrian safety. This Roadshow seeks to generate concern about
the problems, a commitment to "do something about it",
and a way to turn that commitment into action at the community
level by forming a group of pedestrian advocates.
The Roadshow is delivered in a four-hour session, based on the
needs and interests of individual communities. Communities are
encouraged to customize the Roadshow to meet their needs. This
Roadshow is sponsored by USDOT. Only 30 roadshows will be
presented to selected communities across the United States and
are available at no cost to these communities. However,
arrangements such as meeting location, equipment (overhead
projector, VCR) schedule and agenda are the responsibility of the
local community. The USDOT wants communities to have a positive
attitude toward walking and pedestrian safety and is seeking to
establish a link with community "champions" who will
motivate, inspire, and advocate on behalf of the pedestrian.
