Overeaters Anonymous (OA)

• Approach/Method: Non-profit, international organization that provides volunteer support groups worldwide patterned after the 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous program. Members are encouraged to seek professional help for individualized diet/nutrition plan and for emotional or physical problems.

• Clients: Individuals who define themselves as compulsive overeaters.

• Staff: Non-professional volunteers who meet specific criteria, lead meetings, and conduct activities.

• Expected Weight Loss/Length of Program: OA makes no claims for weight loss.

• Cost: Self-supporting with members’ contributions and sales of workbooks, tapes, newsletters, sponsor-outreach programs, and an international monthly journal, Lifeline, which costs $12.99/yr.

• Healthy Lifestyles Component: Recommends emotional, spiritual, and physical recovery changes. Makes no exercise or food recommendations.

• Comments: Inexpensive. Provides group support. No need to follow a specific diet plan to participate. Minimal organization at the group level, so groups vary in approach. No healthcare providers on staff.
