Jenny Craig, Inc.

• Approach/Method: A comprehensive approach to weight management that focuses on three success factors of weight management: developing a healthy relationship with food, building an active lifestyle, and creating balance. Menu plans range from 1,000 to 2,300 calories, depending on the client's starting weight, height, age, gender, and/or health conditions. All menus are based on the Food Guide Pyramid. Jenny Craig food purchases are required at first and are gradually eliminated as client transitions to self-planned menus. The program's exercise component reflects the 1996 Surgeon General's Report on Physical Fitness and Health, which recommends accumulating 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days.

• Client: Mostly females (90%) over age 18. Adolescent program available for ages 13 to 17 (with parental permission).

• Staff: Program developed by on-staff dietitians and reviewed and approved by Medical Advisory Board consisting of physicians, psychologists and an exercise physiologist. All programs are delivered by trained employees who complete 56 hours of pre-in-center training. Staff also participate in weekly meetings and monthly continuing education sessions.

• Expected Weight Loss/Length of Program: Anticipated weight loss is about 1% of body weight or 1 to 2 pounds per week. The length of the program is determined by the amount of weight that the client wants to lose. Rapid weight loss is discouraged.

• Cost: Prices vary. Programs require a one-time enrollment fee plus approximately $72/week for food, which decreases during program term due to fewer food purchases.

• Healthy Lifestyle Component: Individual consultations are available. Information is  provided on healthy eating, stress management and building an active lifestyle. Exercise, in particular, is a critical component of successful weight loss and maintenance. Behavior modification is a part of the overall goal of the program structure.

• Comments: Vitamin-mineral supplements are available. Program information also available at Jenny Craig's Web site: www.jennycraig.com.

• Availability: Serves approximately 65,000 clients weekly in 509 U.S. Centers (48 states), Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Puerto Rico.

• Headquarters: 11355 N. Torrey Pines Rd., La Jolla, CA 92037. Phone: (800) 29-JENNY. E-mail: info@jennycraignews.com.
