Richard Simmons Slimmons

• Approach/Method: Program focuses equally on nutrition, exercise, and motivation. Deal-a-Meal, Richard Simmons’ nutritional program consisting of cards representing daily food exchanges, provides between 1000-2000 calories a day determined by the gender and starting weight of the client. Deal-a-Meal is based on the ADA exchange list and is consistent with the Food Guide Pyramid.

• Clients: Mostly female between the ages of 15 and 65 years.

• Staff: Deal-a-Meal was developed under the guidance of a consultant holding a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition. Exercise programs are created and reviewed by certified exercise professionals including exercise physiologists and kinesiologists.

• Expected Weight Loss/Length of Program: Expected weight loss is one to two pounds per week. The length of the weight-loss phase of the program is dependent on the starting weight of the client. Participants are encouraged to consider the program a lifetime commitment.

• Cost: Individual products vary in cost. The Deal-a-Meal Food Plan is approximately $10.00. Aerobic and strength training exercise videos and audiotape walking programs are available for approximately $20.00 each. Project Me motivation tapes are $25.00. The Farewell to Fat package includes a Disco Sweat aerobics video, Tone n’ Sweat resistance exercise video, toning cords, and vitamin supplements and is available for $40.00. The Get Down the Pounds package includes a Dance Your Pants Off aerobics video, Tonin’ Uptown and Tonin’ Downtown resistance exercise videos, and Simmons Rings for resistance training and is available for $19.95. A variety of low-fat snack foods are also available.

• Healthy Lifestyle Component: Lifestyle modification is a component of the overall program. The program encourages daily exercise and positive mental attitude. A motivational and informational newsletter, Richard Simmons and Friends, is available through subscription. Project Me motivational and support classes are available at Richard Simmons Slimmons in Beverly Hills. A retreat environment with Richard Simmons is offered on Richard Simmons Cruise to Lose.

• Comments: At the Richard Simmons Slimmons Studio in Beverly Hills, clients may attend exercise and motivational classes, often taught by Simmons himself, on a membership or per-class basis.
