Despite the fitness craze of the 80's, we're plumping up for these simple
reasons: WE EAT TOO
MUCH; WE EAT THE WRONG FOODS; WE EXERCISE TOO LITTLE; AND OUR PORTIONS, BOTH AT HOME AND WHEN
EATING OUT, ARE TOO BIG. The fact is, our typical diet is a recipe for risk: high fat, high
calories, and low fiber -- all piled too high on the plate.
Life in the fast lane -- past the fast-food window -- has detoured many of us off the road to
good health. We drive everywhere. We rush all the time; we eat standing up -- and then go on our
hurried, unhealthy ways.
Besides this, we've become a push-button society -- pressing, clicking, tapping away -- erasing the need for any body movement. Everywhere you look buttons do it all: from the PC to the
elevator, from the microwave to the remote control. Think about it: modem technology has
robbed us of what little effort we once exerted to crank up the car window. With each flick of a switch, our American lifestyle becomes more sedentary.
