5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)


Actions/Claims:

5-HTP is a compound that is converted to a chemical (serotonin) in the brain. Among other roles, serotonin is thought to be involved in reduced pain sensitivity. Individuals take this supplement to try to increase tolerance to pain during intense exercise, and to improve endurance.

Research Results:

Well-designed research studies do not support that 5-HTP increases tolerance to pain or improves endurance.
