The proposed effect of chromium is to improve insulin use. Through its effect on insulin, chromium is claimed to reduce the amount of fat in your body and build lean (muscle) mass.

Research Results:

Research on chromium is limited and some of the studies are flawed. The best designed studies showed that chromium supplementation does not increase lean muscle mass or decrease body fat. No form of chromium (chloride, picolinate) has been shown to have a positive effect.
